From October 3-4, 2024, a Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) study visit took place at Ghent University and the Support Centre for Inclusive Higher Education (SIHO) in Ghent, Belgium. The focus was on "Inclusive Internationalisation: From Good Intentions to Measurable Outcomes". Mashokirov Jamshed, Vice-Rector for Science and International Relations at the Tajik State University of Commerce, participated in this event, exploring effective strategies for fostering inclusivity in higher education.
The participants discussed institutional strategies employed by Ghent University and Artevelde University of Applied Sciences to enhance inclusivity in international academic collaboration. Through meaningful discussions with faculty, students, and key stakeholders, attendees, including Mashokirov Jamshed, gained insights into the challenges and successes of inclusive practices.
The role of SIHO was particularly emphasized, offering valuable support for institutions seeking to improve accessibility and inclusivity in higher education. Participants explored how SIHO assists universities in developing policies tailored to diverse student needs, helping promote equity in education.
Additionally, the visit provided a deeper understanding of how the Flanders higher education system is addressing the issue of inclusive internationalisation. Flanders is recognized as a leader in promoting inclusivity, working closely with higher education institutions across Europe and beyond to implement the principles of the Inclusive Higher Education.eu project, which fosters social inclusion and enhances international cooperation.
This study visit has further empowered the participants, including representatives from Tajikistan, with knowledge and practical examples that will help them contribute to more inclusive and collaborative international academic environments.
